Here are 10 ways they can improve your health.

1. Reduce inflammation Like ashwagandha, shilajit can reduce inflammation in the body. The shilajit resin contains fulvic acid, which may play a role in preventing or reducing inflammation. Inflammation is a natural reaction of the body's immune system to protect itself from harmful bacteria or during an injury. However, chronic inflammation can contribute to many conditions, including arthritis, diabetes, atherosclerosis and neurological diseases. Because shilajit has anti-inflammatory properties, it can help reduce the risk of these and other inflammatory conditions.

2. "Fulvic acid, found in shilajit, can effectively prevent cell damage and free radical damage - the main culprits in accelerating the symptoms of aging," - says Praveen Guntipalli, MD, a dual board-certified physician in internal medicine and obesity and medical director of Sanjiva Medical Spa in Dallas.  In addition, a recent randomized double-blind study showed that dietary supplementation with shilajit extract may have collagen-promoting effects and may help reduce age-related bone mass loss.

3. Researchers in the aforementioned randomized trial found a significant increase in bone mineral density in a group of postmenopausal women receiving shilajit supplementation compared to a group receiving a placebo. The study indicates that by reducing bone turnover, shilajit may reduce bone mass loss and the risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis - especially in high-risk populations. Bone turnover is the rate at which bone cells called osteoclasts break down bone tissue to rebuild bone. Accelerated bone turnover increases the risk of osteoporosis.

4. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by a decline in memory, learning, thinking and organizational skills. According to some studies, shilajit can help prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease because fulvic acid, which has antioxidant properties, prevents inflammation and the accumulation of tau protein in the nervous system. Too much tau protein can cause brain inflammation and damage to brain tissue.

Another article from 2012 suggests that a formula containing shilajit and a vitamin B complex may be effective against Alzheimer's disease. While this research shows promising results, it is crucial that researchers conduct more studies to fully establish its role in cognitive health.

5. Alleviating altitude sickness symptoms - Traveling from low to high altitude can cause symptoms including lethargy or fatigue, insomnia, vomiting, dementia and body pain. Traditional medicine practitioners believe that shilajit relieves these symptoms due to its high content of fulvic acid and minerals, which help stimulate the immune system and promote energy production in the body.

6. Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) - Shilajit means "conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness" in Sanskrit, based on the traditional belief of Indian practitioners that this supplement can eliminate weakness or fatigue through its rejuvenating effects. In a 2012 animal study, researchers induced chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in rats for 21 days. They found that shilajit helped reduce CFS symptoms by preventing problems in the mitochondria, also known as energy units inside cells. While this is promising, further research is needed to confirm whether these benefits also apply to humans.

7. Support men's health - Shilajit is believed to improve reproductive health and fertility in men by increasing total sperm count, sperm motility and testosterone levels. A 2010 study found that nearly 50% of a group of 60 infertile men reported an increase in sperm count after taking shilajit twice a day for 90 days. In another clinical study involving 96 men between the ages of 45 and 55, researchers found an increase in total testosterone levels in the group receiving shilajit supplements for 90 days compared to the group receiving a placebo.

8. Treating iron deficiency anemia - A lack of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood can lead to anemia. Iron deficiency can also cause a type of anemia called iron deficiency anemia, which causes symptoms such as headache, weakness and fatigue. Since iron is a mineral found in shilajit, it can help treat iron deficiency anemia, according to older studies in rat models. As a result, it may also help alleviate symptoms such as fatigue associated with the condition.

9. Reduces risk of heart disease - Shilajit may also be good for heart health. After giving shilajit to a group of lab rats before inducing myocardial injury, researchers in a study published in Cardiovascular Toxicology found that the group that received shilajit treatment had less heart damage compared to the group that did not. In another small 2003 study in which researchers placed participants in two groups - a placebo group and a group taking shilajit - researchers found a decrease in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the shilajit group. Excess cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood can harden arteries and cause atherosclerotic plaques, increasing the risk of developing hypertension and heart disease.

10. May promote muscle repair - According to a study that evaluated the response of informational RNA of skeletal muscle to shilajit, obese people who took the supplement responded better to exercise than those who did not. Shilajit can help activate genes that enable skeletal muscles to adapt quickly to new workouts. In other words, shilajit can help improve muscle repair, especially in some people.
